Participants gain practical, immediately usable skills such as listening to understand, reflecting and validating emotions, avoiding the urge to fix, and using accessible language to support emotional expression. The presentation also emphasizes creating welcoming, structured, accessible and sometimes social environments that foster safety and connection, reinforcing the core idea that effective grief support is not about having the right answers, but about creating space where grief can be spoken and witnessed.
Service to Support: Grief Advocacy & Aftercare for Funeral Professionals explores how funeral professionals can extend their role beyond logistics to become steady, compassionate guides in the early stages of grief. Grounded in the lived experience of loss and insights from the grieving brain and body, this presentation reframes aftercare as a vital continuation of care, emphasizing the impact of presence, communication, and pacing when families are overwhelmed and vulnerable. Participants gain practical, immediately applicable tools—including trauma-informed language, active listening, structured guidance for decision-making, and strategies for building strong referral networks—to support grievers with clarity and confidence. When Loss Touches Campus: Responding with Compassion, Community, and Confidence as a Critical Incident Response Team equips campus professionals with a grounded, human-centered approach to responding to loss, grief, and trauma within a university setting. This presentation reframes grief as a natural, complex experience that ripples across entire campus ecosystems—impacting students, faculty, staff, and leadership—and emphasizes the role of response teams in creating stability, connection, and clear communication during moments of crisis.
