Dr. Genna's Story

i have worn many hats and taken on many roles. The common thread (pun intended) that runs through these roles is a focus upon helping and journeying with others - from children to seniors - through various seasons of life.

I began processing loss and grief early in life, first encountering death while still in elementary school. When my Uncle Darrick died in 1995, I was just learning to play the flute. In the midst of my sadness, I poured my feelings into music, composing an arrangement of one of his favorite songs, “The Rose” by Bette Midler, and playing it at his funeral. That moment became an early lesson in how creativity and expression can help carry us through heartbreak.

In the early 2000s, I co-founded the Los Alamos, NM chapter of the Yellow Ribbon Suicide

Prevention and Awareness organization and later served as its President after the suicide death of a friend.

My professional background includes work as a social sciences university educator and researcher. I taught at three universities, including a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Fashion Studies role at Kansas State University. Before dedicating my career to grief and loss services, I built a national reputation as a fashion and museum scholar exploring the ways clothing and popular culture shape our understanding of history and identity. My research and teaching spanned topics from the cultural power of Titanic costume displays, to the social meaning of retro style, to how popular media influences what we wear. I curated museum exhibits, guided walking tours of historic dress collections, and advised award-winning student projects that connected fashion with storytelling and heritage. Through this work, I helped people see fashion not just as fabric and trend, but as a living language of culture—one that tells us who we are, where we come from, and how we imagine the future.

I have also served as a caregiver for young adults with developmental/intellectual disabilities and children of varying ages.

I became an INELDA-trained death doula in 2022, a Certified Grief Educator through David Kessler in 2023, and a Certified Provider of grief support through specialized training with renowned grief therapist and author Claire Bidwell Smith’s Grief and Loss Comprehensive Program in 2025. Today, I offer support through my business, Invictus by Genna: Grief & Loss Services, serve as the New Mexico Community Liaison for HeartLight Center (a grief support and education nonprofit), and serve as the Chair of the Grief Networking Alliance of New Mexico (GNA-NM).
